The cross-pattern

The whole vest is made with the same pattern. The cross-pattern. This is how it works:

wintervestpatroon

Or watch this video. It’s in Dutch, so maybe hard to follow, but you can see what I do.

Back part and front parts:

We crochet the front and the back together. So no sewing, it’s one piece. The size of the vest is european 38 for woman. If this size doesn’t fit you, you can easily make it bigger. Just chain more in the beginning. Make sure it’s divisible by 10. Put it around your breasts to measure if the size is alright (that’s where we start to crochet). Don’t forget we add a board after we’ve done the front- and backparts. So don’t close it completly when you put it on to fit. Chain 7 more in the beginning. End every row with a chain 3, unless it says otherwise at the end of a row.

Chain 117.
Row 1 – 22: Crochet the cross-pattern.
Row 23: Increase 1 dc in the beginning an at the end. So in stead of 2 dc in the beginning, it’s 3 dc now. Continu cross-pattern.
Row 24: Increase 1 dc in the beginning an at the end. So in stead of 3 dc in the beginning, it’s 4 dc. Continu cross-pattern.
Row 25 and 26: Crochet the cross-pattern (9 dc in the beginning).
Row 27 – 34: Increase 1 dc in the beginning and at the end. Continu cross-pattern.
Row 35 – 42: Increase 2 dc in the beginning and at the end. Continu cross-pattern.  Chain 2 at the end en turn your work.
Row 43: Crochet hdc. Chain 2 and turn your work.
Row 44 – 48: Crochet a board. Do it this way (it’s in dutch, but you can see what I do):

End every row with a chain 2 and turn your work. Finish when you’re done with the board.

Now we are going to crochet the front parts and back part from the breast until the neck. We start with a front part. At the end of every row you chain 3 and then turn your work.

Attach the yarn at the point where you started this work.
Row 1: Increase 1 dc. So start with 2 dc. Continu cross-pattern for 3 crosses. After the last cross crochet 1 dc.
Row 2: Continu cross-pattern.
Row 3: Decrease 1 dc in the beginning. The first chain 3 is your first dc. Crochet immediately 3 dc in the chain 3 space of row 2. Continu cross-pattern.
Row 4: Continu cross-pattern. decrease 1 dc at the end.
Row 5: decrease 1 dc. 1 dc, Continu cross-pattern.
Row 6: Continu cross-pattern. decrease 1 dc at the end.
Row 7: Skip 4 stiches, crochet a dc. Chain 2 and Continu cross-pattern.
Row 8: Continu cross-pattern. End with 1 dc in the chain 3 space of row 7.
Row 9: Skip 4 stiches, dc. Chain 2 and Continu cross-pattern.
Row 10: Continu cross-pattern. End with 1 dc in the chain 3 space of row 9.
Row 11: Start with 1 dc, chain 2, skip 3 stiches, dc. Continu cross-pattern. Finish.

Do the same on the other side of the vest. When you are done, attach your yarn in the center, 1 cross further than the front parts (also stop 1 cross earlier). Continu the cross-pattern for 11 rows. Only increase in the first row with 2 dc in the first row at the beginning. Finish after the 11 rows. It will look like this (if you have done it correctly):

Sew the front parts to the backpart.

Board:

End every row with a chain 3 and turn.

Row 1: Crochet 2 dc in every dc. In the back just 1 dc in every dc.
Row 2 and 3: all dc
Row 4: Make the holes for the buttons. 5 dc, chain 1, skip 1 stich. *10 dc, chain 1, skip 1 stich*. Repeat between ** 8 times. After that only dc.
Row 5: All dc. In the holes for the buttons make 1 dc. Finish at the end of the row. Sew the buttons on the other side, on the same heigt as the holes.

Sleeves

Chain 25. End with a slip stich to make a ring. Work around.
Row 1: Chain 2. 24 hdc. End with a slip stich in the 2nd chain of the first chain 2.
Row 2 – 4: Chain 2. Crochet a board, see video up. End with a slip stich in the 2nd chain of the first chain 2.
Row 5: Chain 3. Crochet a cross (chain 2, dc, skip 3 stiches, dc, chain 2. Continue cross-pattern. Increase 2 dc in the last dc, so the total is 5 dc. End with a slip stich in the 3th chain of the first chain 3.
Row 6: Chain 3. Crochet cross-pattern. End with a slip stich in the 3th chain of the first chain 3.
Row 7: Start with a slip stich. Chain 3. Continue cross-pattern. End with a slip stich in the 3th chain of the first chain 3.
Row 8: Chain 3. Skip 3 stiches, dc, chain 2. Continue cross-pattern. End with a slip stich in the 3th chain of the first chain 3.
Row 9: Chain 6. dc in cross. Continue cross-pattern. End with a slip stich in the 3th chain of the first chain 6.
Row 10 and 11: Chain 3, crochet cross-pattern. End with a slip stich in the 3th chain of the first chain 3.
Row 12 – 15: Repeat row 8 – 11.
Row 16: Same like row 8. Instead of the last 3 dc in the chain 3 space, crochet 5 dc.
Row 17: Same like row 9. Only increase 2 dc in last dc.
Row 18: Same like row 10. Only increase 1 dc in last stich, so it make 5 dc in total. Chain 1 and end with a slip stich in the 3th chain of the first chain 3.
Row 19: Same like row 11. Only end with 1 dc in the chain space of row 18, chain 3 and crochet another dc in the chain space. End with a slip stich in the 3th chain of the first chain 3.
Row 20 – 37: Repeat row 8 – 11. End with a row 9 for row 37.
Row 38: Same like row 10, but stop after you made your 3th cross. End with a dc of the next 5 dc in the pattern. Chain 3 and turn.
Row 39: dc in chain 3 space, chain 2, dc in chain 3 space. Continue cross-pattern. Chain 3, turn.
Row 40: decrease 1 dc. Continue cross-pattern. So you have 8 dc in the beginning of this row. decrease 1 dc in the end. Chain 3, turn.
Row 41: decrease 1 dc. 3 dc, continue cross-pattern. So you have 10 dc in the beginnen of this row. End with one dc and decrease 1 dc. Chain 3, turn.
Row 42: decrease 1 dc. 4 dc. Continue cross-pattern. End with decrease 1 dc. Chain 3, turn.
Row 43: decrease 1 dc. Immediately make a cross. chain 2, dc in cross space again. Continue cross-pattern. end with decrease 1 dc. Chain 3, turn.
Row 44: 1 dc in chain space. Continue cross-pattern. 1 dc in chain space. decrease 1 dc at the end. Finish.
